What is this?

What is colocation — and who is it for?

With colocation you bring your own hardware (or have it delivered) and we provide rack space, power and network connectivity. You keep full control over configuration and software; we take care of the physical infrastructure — cold aisle containment, redundant cooling, UPS- and diesel-backed power, on-site remote hands when needed.

It makes sense when you have specific hardware requirements a standard cloud can't cover: GPU servers, high disk density, exotic operating systems, your own hardware security modules. Or when compliance demands physical control over your hardware. Or simply pragmatic: because you already own hardware and don't want it sitting in the office.

Not a good fit if you really just need a server and don't want to look after an operating system — then Plesk vServer is the better route. Or if you want bare metal without buying hardware yourself — then take a Dedicated Server from us. Colocation is explicitly for people who know what they're doing (or know who to ask).

Location

The location: ConnectaPark Düsseldorf

Our cage sits in a data center at ConnectaPark in the south of Düsseldorf — a carrier-neutral fiber campus right by the A46 and A59 motorways, in the middle of the Rhine-Ruhr economic region, with short paths towards DE-CIX and the Benelux. You reach the location easily by car; your pallets reach it easily by freight.

Cage means: an enclosed, separately secured area with 16 of our own 19-inch racks — entered only by us and by customers we accompany. The building infrastructure (power, cooling, security) is provided by the data-center operator, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 27001.

Power & backup power

Redundant UPS systems buffer every fluctuation; a diesel generator takes over up to 100% of the load on outage — spinning up in around 30 seconds, with monthly function tests and refueling possible during operation. The data center runs on 100% green power from hydro.

Cooling

Air conditioning via raised floor with redundant precision cooling units (around 50 kW of cooling capacity each), constant supply air at 24 °C ± 2 °C. Our racks additionally sit in cold aisle containment — even temperature across the full rack height.

Security & access

Entry only via RFID card plus biometric hand scanner, 24/7 video surveillance with long-term archive, alarm system wired to a security service. Solid construction, self-closing doors — and our cage as an additional locked layer behind all of it.

Fire protection

Early fire detection above and below the raised floor — smoldering fires are caught before open flames develop. The antistatic raised floor carries 600 mm panels and keeps cooling and cabling cleanly separated.

Carriers & connectivity

Multiply redundant carrier connectivity over diverse fiber routes to the handover points of the major carriers, with redundant, separate building entries. ConnectaPark has grown as a carrier-neutral location — short paths to many networks.

Certification & law

The data-center operation is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 27001. Located in Germany: your data and hardware sit under German and European law, and you get a data processing agreement per Art. 28 GDPR on request.

Hardware format — what you can install

For plans up to the half rack, the hardware you bring in must be 19-inch format (standard servers, switches, rack-mount UPS units). The reason: you share the cabinet with other customers, and deviating form factors break the occupancy logic and the cold aisle containment.

Full rack Only with the full rack is the cabinet exclusively yours — there you may install hardware in any form factor (tower servers on rails, odd sizes, external storage boxes). What still applies: electrically and thermally within the rack limits (up to 14.4 kW).

Power billing

Power — metered around the clock, billed in watts, passed on fairly

We don't bill power as a flat rate per outlet (that would overcharge you at low draw) and not per kWh either (legally that would be electricity trading and require a utility license we don't have — and that isn't worth the paperwork to us). Instead: every one of your outlets is metered electronically around the clock. From these 24/7 readings we compute the monthly average — and that's the basis we bill on.

  • Every one of your outlets is metered continuously around the clock from the day it goes live — second-level readings feed into a monthly average.
  • Historical consumption is visible in the customer center six months back — minute by minute, with a daily-curve chart. No black box.
  • Draws below 50 W are rounded up to 50 W (minimum billing). Above that: to the watt.
  • Multiple outlets are summed per contract and billed together.

Network & traffic

Network & traffic — 1 Gbit port included, billed 95/5

Every plan comes with one 1 Gbit RJ45 port included. A second port or SFP+ uplinks (fiber) with up to 10 Gbit are available on request — open a ticket and we'll sort it out.

We bill traffic using the industry-standard 95/5 method (also known as 95th percentile billing): we measure your bandwidth usage continuously in 5-minute intervals — inbound and outbound. At the end of the month the top 5% of all readings are discarded, so short load spikes cost you nothing. The highest remaining value is your billed bandwidth in Mbit/s.

Example: your server serves calm web traffic all month, the 95th percentile lands at 25 Mbit/s → 25 × €2.38 = €59.50 (€50.00 net) for the month.

  • Inbound and outbound traffic are both counted — billed is the higher of the two 95th-percentile values.
  • Settled at the end of each month; you see the usage curve in the customer center.
  • Short spikes (backups, deployments, traffic peaks) don't matter, because the top 5% are discarded.
  • During volumetric DDoS traffic we enable the filter — that traffic doesn't count toward your readings.
  • If you need sustained high bandwidth (streaming, CDN origin), talk to us and we'll calculate a commit model.

60 cm standard cabinets in a closed cold-aisle architecture — cold supply air flows directly to the hardware front, exhaust at the rear is removed in a controlled way. Even temperatures for every rack unit, in each of the 16 racks.

4 × 3.6 kW per rack — UPS- and diesel-backed

Four independent 16 A feeds per rack, each fully backed by UPS and diesel generator. Usable as A+B redundancy or as individual feeds. Skip the redundancy and you can draw up to 14.4 kW per rack — GPU setups included.

Power metered 24/7, billed in watts

Every outlet is recorded electronically around the clock. From the 24/7 readings we compute the monthly average in watts and pass the energy cost on proportionally — plus a small metering surcharge. Six months of minute-level history in the customer center.

Our own cage — access accompanied by xaweho

Our 16 racks sit in an enclosed, separately secured cage area. Access happens accompanied by a xaweho team member, by prior appointment — typically within 24 hours. With the full rack, your own 24/7 access is possible on request.

On-site remote hands by our team

We usually handle remote-hands tickets within a few hours during business hours. Outside of them with the booked 24/7 on-call service — nights, weekends and public holidays included.

Basic DDoS protection included

We filter volumetric attacks away at the network level. Filtered attack traffic doesn't count toward your 95/5 readings. For specific application-layer attacks, talk to us.

Reverse DNS freely configurable

You control the PTR records of your IPs yourself via the customer center. Important for mail servers, clean for any application with outbound connections.

Setup

From inquiry to a production rack.

    Send your request

    Open a ticket with your requirements: desired rack size, planned power draw (a rough estimate is fine), special needs (A+B redundancy, SFP+, IPMI VPN, 24/7 on-call, GPU setup). We come back with an availability check and a quote.

  2. 2

    Contract and base setup

    After confirmation you receive the contract documents, SVB references and credentials for the customer center. We reserve the rack position, assign IPv4 and IPv6 and prepare the power circuit.

  3. 3

    Ship your hardware or install it yourself

    Three ways: (a) You come by at an agreed time and a xaweho team member accompanies you during installation (the standard). (b) You send the hardware by freight, we receive it and confirm arrival. (c) Book the onboarding service — we unpack, rack, cable, power on and report your system online. That last one is the fast lane.

  4. 4

    Network configuration

    You get the network details from us (IPv4, IPv6, gateway, netmask) and configure your hardware with them in advance — then it's reachable right after being plugged in.

    Power monitoring in the customer center

    As soon as you're powered on, you see your average power draw in the customer center — with six months of history. The usage trend helps with capacity planning and hardware efficiency tuning.

    You manage your hardware as usual. For physical work you book an accompanied visit or remote hands. For network topics you open a ticket. Power and traffic usage stay transparently visible at all times.

What we don't offer

So it's clear where colocation ends.

So it's clear where colocation ends with us:

  • ! No hardware procurement as a standard service. You bring hardware or have it delivered. On request we help with the selection (paid consulting), but procurement runs through you or your hardware vendor.
  • ! No crypto mining. Mining has a very poor ratio of power draw to value per rack unit and causes thermal problems for neighboring racks. We decline it. (GPU servers for AI, inference and rendering, on the other hand, are explicitly welcome.)
  • ! No non-19″ form factors except in the full rack. Tower servers, odd sizes or external storage boxes don't fit plans up to the half rack — you'd disrupt the occupancy and the cold-aisle architecture. With the full rack the cabinet is exclusively yours and the form factor is up to you.
  • ! No custom cooling setups in the rack. The site's air conditioning covers up to 14.4 kW per rack — enough even for dense GPU setups. If you want to install your own water cooling or custom cooling, ask first — the answer is usually no.
  • ! No cross-connects to other customers. We don't set up direct patches between customer racks. Connections to other providers and carriers run over the regular network.
  • ! No hardware insurance. Your hardware is your hardware. Theft, fire or water damage — you insure that yourself, as needed. We're liable per the general terms of the SVB Colocation.
  • ! No anonymity. We know you as a contract partner, and the contract requires full identification. Anonymous colocation doesn't exist with us — and wouldn't even be possible under KYC rules.

Frequently asked questions

What does a full rack realistically cost including power and traffic?
Example: full rack €653.99 + 1,500 W average × €0.39 = €585.00 for power + 95/5 traffic (say 50 Mbit/s at the 95th percentile: €119.00) = ~€1,358 per month (~€1,141 net). The power and traffic share varies with your usage — both are metered 24/7, and you see your curves minute by minute in the customer center.
How exactly does 95/5 traffic billing work?
We measure your bandwidth usage in 5-minute intervals, inbound and outbound. At the end of the month all readings are sorted and the top 5% are discarded — that's a good 36 hours of full load that cost you nothing. The highest remaining value is your billed bandwidth: €2.38 (€2.00 net) per Mbit/s. Short spikes from backups or deployments drop out; sustained load pays fairly by usage. This is the standard method carriers and data centers use to settle among themselves.
Is the 1 Gbit port enough — and what if it isn't?
For the vast majority of colocation workloads, 1 Gbit is comfortably enough on a sustained basis — even under load. If you need more: a second RJ45 port or SFP+ uplinks (fiber) with up to 10 Gbit are available on request — open a ticket with your setup and we'll make you an offer.
Can I host GPU servers with you?
Yes, explicitly. Each rack provides 4 × 3.6 kW — up to 14.4 kW if you skip feed redundancy. The site's cooling (redundant precision units plus cold aisle containment) carries that. AI training, inference, rendering: gladly. Crypto mining: no. Align the configuration with us briefly by ticket first, and we'll check the power and thermal budget for your position in the rack.
What do the 4 power feeds per rack mean for me?
Every rack has four independent 16 A feeds (3.6 kW each), all fully UPS- and diesel-generator-backed. You can use them as A+B redundancy (hardware with two PSUs survives the failure of one feed without a reboot) or as individual feeds for maximum power — up to 14.4 kW per rack. Plans from 1U to the half rack include one circuit; the second one for A+B you book as an add-on — the full rack includes all four feeds.
What is cold aisle containment and what do I get out of it?
The racks stand in closed rows: cold supply air flows only through the contained cold aisle to the server fronts, warm exhaust is removed at the rear in a controlled way. The benefits: even temperatures across the full rack height (no hot spots at the top), better cooling efficiency, lower energy cost per cooled server. For you that means: your hardware lives longer and runs more stably.
Can I come with hardware I don't own yet?
Sure. Tell us what you plan to buy — we check whether it fits (rack depth, power needs, IPMI options). When ordering, you set our location as the delivery address; the hardware arrives, we receive it. With the onboarding service it's online shortly after.
What happens when my hardware fails?
We can send remote hands (reboot, visual inspection). For actual hardware defects, sourcing a replacement is on you. You can speed that up with our hot-spare storage service — we keep a spare part on site that we can swap in immediately on failure.
How does access to the data center work?
The standard: you register by ticket, a xaweho team member picks you up at the location at the agreed time and accompanies you through the security gates (RFID plus biometric hand scanner) to the rack in our cage. The background: we carry the responsibility toward the data-center operator and make sure the access rules are followed. Only with the full rack is your own 24/7 access possible on request — you get your own access card and are registered as a keyholder.
Which hardware form factors are allowed?
For 1U to 5U and the half rack: only classic 19-inch format (standard servers, switches, rack-mount UPS units). For the full rack: whatever you want — tower servers on rails, odd sizes, external storage. What still applies: electrically and thermally within the rack limits (up to 14.4 kW). The background: in shared racks, non-19″ hardware would disrupt the cold-aisle architecture.
How fast is the setup?
Request → quote → contract: 1–3 business days. Rack reservation and power circuit: 1–3 business days. Hardware arrival is on you. With the onboarding service, hardware is typically productive within 1–2 business days of arrival. So realistically about a week in total, depending on hardware delivery.
What about audit and certification requirements?
The data-center operation at the site is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 (the operator ensures that). We sign a data processing agreement per Art. 28 GDPR on request. For specific audit requirements (PCI DSS, TISAX etc.), talk to us in advance — we'll check whether our configuration covers them.
Minimum term and cancellation?
3-month minimum term for all services (rack plan, service add-ons, IPMI VPN, 24/7 on-call). After that, cancel monthly with 30 days' notice to the end of the month. For a longer upfront commitment (12 or 24 months) the price is negotiable — talk to us.
Is there a service agreement for colocation?
Yes — a dedicated SVB Colocation (in German; the German text is binding) that concretely regulates: what infrastructure we provide, what availability we aim for, what you deliver as the customer, which usage is not permitted (mining etc.) and how we handle hardware defects. It takes precedence over our general terms in case of conflict.
