Rule of thumb for the size: used storage on your Synology times 1.2 to 1.5 — the buffer belongs to the backup versions. Need more than 25 TB? Open a ticket — you'll get a concrete quote within one business day.

What is this?

What is Hyper Backup Storage — and why isn't the NAS alone enough?

Hyper Backup is the backup app that ships with every Synology — incremental, deduplicated, versioned. What's missing is a target outside your own four walls. That's exactly what you book here: you set us up as the remote end in Hyper Backup, and from then on your DiskStation backs up to us on schedule. No agent, no extra software, no tinkering.

Why bother? RAID protects against disk failure, snapshots against accidental deletion — but both live in the same box. Fire, theft, a power surge or ransomware hit the NAS and the local backup at the same time. The 3-2-1 rule demands one copy in a different place. This product is that place.

And that place is Germany: our own hardware at German locations, German and European law (GDPR, BDSG), no US CLOUD Act. If you enable client-side encryption in Hyper Backup, not a single readable byte leaves your house — what we store is a data blob that only your key can open.

The price is deliberately simple: €8 per TB per month, from 1 to 25 TB, no tiers, no setup fee, traffic free of charge. You set the size with a slider and can change it later via ticket. Need more than 25 TB? Open a ticket.

Features

Seven reasons your backup is in good hands here.

Most of this comes from Hyper Backup — we supply the target, the location and the support.

Backup with built-in tools

Hyper Backup is already on your Synology. Create a new target, enter our credentials, set a schedule — that's the entire setup. No agent on your machines, no extra tool, no scripts.

Incremental and deduplicated

After the initial backup, Hyper Backup only transfers changes, and identical data blocks are stored just once. That goes easy on your connection and your booked storage — many versions cost far less space than they sound.

Encryption where you keep the key

Enable client-side encryption in the backup job: your Synology encrypts before anything leaves your house. All we see is a data blob. To be clear: lose the key, lose the backup — even we can't recover it then. Store the key file somewhere safe.

Versions and rotation

How many versions are kept for how long is up to you in the backup job — Smart Recycle rotates automatically. So you can get back the state from three weeks ago, not just last night's.

Restores without drama

Deleted a single file? Pick the version in Hyper Backup on your DiskStation and bring it back. NAS replaced or dead? The same wizard restores the complete backup onto new hardware.

All backups in Germany

Our own hardware at German locations, run by a German provider. Your backups fall under GDPR and BDSG — no US CLOUD Act, no government request routed through a US parent company. If you get audited, you can show exactly where the copy sits.

One price, predictable

€8 per TB per month — at 1 TB and at 25 TB alike. No setup fee, no egress fees, cancel monthly. And traffic is free — in and out, including a full restore. Your backup costs are fixed before you order, not on the invoice.

Straight talk

What you're not booking here.

So it's clear what you're booking — and what not:

  • ! General-purpose cloud storage — this product accepts Hyper Backup only. If you want a drive, sync or photo upload, storageDRIVE is the right product.
  • ! Other backup protocols (S3, rsync, BorgBackup) — one protocol, run properly. For Proxmox VE backups there's our Proxmox Backup Server.
  • ! Recovery without the key — if you encrypt client-side and lose the key file, the backup is locked for good. That's the whole point, but it needs saying.

Setup

Five steps to an off-site backup.

  1. 1

    Pick a size and order

Rule of thumb: used storage on your Synology times 1.2 to 1.5 — the buffer belongs to the versions. Thanks to deduplication that's enough in most cases. Set the size with the slider, order, done.

  2. 2

    Receive your credentials

Once payment arrives, we set up your backup target — typically within 24 hours. Server address, username and password arrive by mail.

  3. 3

    Create the backup task

On your Synology: open Hyper Backup+ → backup task → choose Synology as the target, enter our server address and your credentials, select folders and apps.

  4. 4

    Set encryption and schedule

Enable client-side encryption and store the key file somewhere safe — not on the NAS itself. Set a schedule, typically nightly. Turn on integrity checks while you're at it.

  5. 5

    Run the first backup

The initial backup pushes your entire dataset through your upload line — at 40 Mbit/s upload that's roughly 400 GB per day, so plan for patience. After that, only changes are transferred; you won't notice it day to day.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to get started?
A Synology running DSM with Hyper Backup installed (free in the Package Center, usually already there) and an internet connection. Nothing else — no extra tool, no agent, no contract beyond the month.
How big does my backup target need to be?
Rule of thumb: used storage times 1.2 to 1.5. Hyper Backup deduplicates and compresses, so versions cost less space than you'd think. Picked too small? No harm done: change the size via ticket, we switch you over — no data loss.
How long does the first backup take?
The initial backup runs over your upload bandwidth: at 40 Mbit/s upload roughly 400 GB per day, slower DSL takes correspondingly longer. Hyper Backup simply resumes after interruptions. After that, only changes are transferred — a normal daily job finishes in minutes.
Does traffic cost extra?
No. All traffic is free of charge — the nightly backups as well as a full restore when it matters. No egress fees, no volume pricing: you pay for the booked storage, nothing else.
Can I restore individual files?
Yes. In Hyper Backup on your DiskStation you pick the version and the file and restore exactly that — from a single document to a complete folder. After a total failure, the same wizard restores the entire backup onto new hardware.
Are my backups encrypted?
The transfer is encrypted. On top of that — and this is the important part — you enable client-side encryption in the backup job: your Synology encrypts before the upload, the key stays with you, and all we store is a data blob. Keep the key file safe — without it, nobody can open the backup. Not even us.
What happens when my target fills up?
The backup job reports the error in DSM; existing backups stay untouched. The fix: shorten retention in the job — or go one size up via ticket, we switch you over the same business day.
Can I change the size later?
Yes, anytime via ticket. Upgrades come with no data loss; downgrades work as long as your backup data fits into the smaller size. From the switch onwards you pay the new price — €8 per TB, as always.
Can I back up multiple Synology devices?
Book a separate target per device — that keeps storage, credentials and restores cleanly apart. Got many devices? Open a ticket and we'll work out the most sensible split together.
What makes you different from the NAS vendor's own cloud?
Technically the path is the same — Hyper Backup as the sender. The difference is the operator: a German provider, our own hardware in Germany, GDPR without a detour through a corporation abroad. And the support: your ticket is answered by one of three engineers who run the system themselves.
How does this relate to storageDRIVE?
storageDRIVE is the virtual drive for everyday use — drive letter, browser, sync. Hyper Backup Storage is deliberately one thing only: the remote end for your NAS backup. Separate products, separate storage — so a full drive never crowds out your backup.
What's the minimum contract term?
One month. You can cancel monthly.

Your Synology deserves a backup.

The off-site copy the 3-2-1 rule demands — encrypted with your key, stored in Germany. Set up in an evening.
