What is this?
What is Proxmox Backup Server — and when do I need it?
Proxmox Backup Server (PBS for short) is the official backup solution for Proxmox VE. It takes incremental, deduplicating backups of your virtual machines — fast, space-efficient, with quick restores of single files from VM backups.
You need PBS if you run Proxmox VE and want more than a nightly vzdump tar. PBS takes a full backup every day — but stores only the changes. After the first backup, a 100 GB VM typically produces 1–2 GB of difference per day.
We run the PBS for you. Nothing to install, no disks to buy, no hardware to manage. You get the datastore URL and fingerprint, enter them in your Proxmox VE, done.

Client-side encryption
AES-256-GCM encrypts your backups on your Proxmox VE before anything leaves the house. We receive encrypted blocks and can't read them — even if the hardware were seized, your backup stays a block without meaning.
Sizes in 1 TB steps
From 1 to 25 TB, every step bookable on its own. You don't round up to the next doubling — you book what you need, and upgrade when it gets tight. Your backups stay in place.
Incremental backups with deduplication
First backup full, everything after that only changes. Identical blocks are deduplicated across all VMs. 100 GB of Windows VM backups often takes just 30 GB of storage, because all Windows VMs share parts.
Retention policies
Configurable: 7 daily + 4 weekly + 12 monthly + 5 yearly backups. PBS manages this automatically — no cleanup scripts needed. What's too old gets thrown out.
10 Gbit uplink, free traffic
We connect every PBS server to the internet at 10 Gbit — so the bottleneck is practically always on your side, not ours. And you pay nothing for traffic, in or out.
Single-file restore from VM backups

Order a plan
Pick a PBS plan in the customer center. Once payment arrives we review the order manually and set up the datastore, typically within 24 hours. You get the server address, datastore name and fingerprint by mail.

Add the datastore in Proxmox VE
In your Proxmox VE:
Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server. Enter the server address, datastore name, username and password (sent to you). Fill the fingerprint field with the value from our mail. - 3
Configure a backup job
Create a new job under
Datacenter → Backup → Add. Pick the storage (your new PBS datastore), VMs, schedule and retention. We recommend "every day at 02:00" with 7d/4w/6m retention. - 4
Set up encryption (recommended)
On Proxmox VE: create a key with
proxmox-backup-client key create /etc/pve/priv/storage/<PBS-name>.enc, then assign it to the storage:pvesm set <PBS-name> --encryption-key /etc/pve/priv/storage/<PBS-name>.enc— or simply enable the encryption option when creating the PBS storage in the GUI. Store the key safely (password manager or offline backup) — no key, no restore. Details in the knowledge base. - 5
Run the first backup
Trigger it manually or wait for the schedule. The first backup is a full backup and takes 30 minutes to several hours, depending on VM size and your uplink. Every backup after that is incremental and fast.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference to storageDRIVE and Hyper Backup Storage?
storageDRIVE is the virtual disk for any computer — files via SMB drive, browser, WebDAV or SFTP. Hyper Backup Storage accepts Synology NAS backups. Proxmox Backup Server is specialized for Proxmox VE: deduplication, incremental backups, fast restores of single files from VM backups. If you run Proxmox, you want PBS.
How does billing work?
Fixed monthly price for the booked size — 25 sizes in 1 TB steps from 1 to 25 TB. No usage gambling, no surprise at the end of the month. If your datastore fills up, you upgrade to the next size — it's never more than 1 TB away, and your backups stay in place.
Are my backups really encrypted?
Yes, with AES-256-GCM. Encryption happens client-side on your Proxmox VE before the data is transferred to us. We cannot decrypt your backups. Careful: keep the key safe — lose the key and the backup is worthless.
Can I restore just part of a backup?
Yes. PBS can browse backups — you see a VM's file structure and extract single files without restoring the whole VM. That works right from the Proxmox VE web interface.
What if I cancel?
You get 30 days to copy all your backups. We help with the migration — to another provider or to hardware at your place. After 30 days, backups are deleted in line with GDPR.
Can I use PBS without Proxmox VE?
In principle yes, but with limits. PBS has a standalone client for files (
proxmox-backup-client) that you can use directly on Linux servers. For file backups there are better tools like Borg or rsnapshot — PBS is specialized in VM backup.How many backups can I store?
As many as fit your plan. PBS deduplicates, so considerably more fits than the nominal TB size suggests. A typical 1 TB allotment holds 5–10 TB of backup data — depending on how similar your VMs are.
What about retention lock?
PBS supports retention policies, but no 'immutable' lock in the classic sense. If you need protection against deletion attacks (ransomware, a compromised admin account), open a ticket — we can set up separate append-only datastores.
Which Proxmox versions are supported?
PBS works from Proxmox VE 6.4 onward. We run current PBS versions, backwards compatible with all current Proxmox VE releases.
How fast is a restore, really?
Limited by your internet connection. On a symmetric 1 Gbit line you pull roughly 100 GB/h. Single-file restore is faster still, because PBS fetches only the blocks it needs.
Back up your VMs outside the hypervisor shell.
A backup on the same cluster is not a backup. A PBS with us sits in a different data center than your Proxmox VE — no matter where that runs.
