Cloud · Specialized backup
A backup target for your Proxmox VE — encrypted, in 1 TB steps from 1 to 25 TB, in Germany. From €9/month.
If you run Proxmox VE, at some point you want a reliable backup target — one that doesn't sit in the same rack as your hypervisor. We host the Proxmox Backup Server for you, encrypted, with a 10 Gbit uplink — and you pick the size in 1 TB steps, from 1 to 25 TB.
What is this?
Proxmox Backup Server (PBS for short) is the official backup solution for Proxmox VE. It takes incremental, deduplicating backups of your virtual machines — fast, space-efficient, with quick restores of single files from VM backups.
You need PBS if you run Proxmox VE and want more than a nightly vzdump tar. PBS takes a full backup every day — but stores only the changes. After the first backup, a 100 GB VM typically produces 1–2 GB of difference per day.
We run the PBS for you. Nothing to install, no disks to buy, no hardware to manage. You get the datastore URL and fingerprint, enter them in your Proxmox VE, done.

All prices include 19% German VAT, cancel monthly, no setup fee. Odd amounts are rounded up in the display — at checkout you pay the exact, sometimes slightly lower price. Upgrading works anytime — your backups stay in place. Need more than 25 TB? Technically we can deliver datastores up to 50 TB — open a ticket and we'll work out the right size for you.
Features
Six things a plain tar dump on NFS can't match.
AES-256-GCM encrypts your backups on your Proxmox VE before anything leaves the house. We receive encrypted blocks and can't read them — even if the hardware were seized, your backup stays a block without meaning.
From 1 to 25 TB, every step bookable on its own. You don't round up to the next doubling — you book what you need, and upgrade when it gets tight. Your backups stay in place.
First backup full, everything after that only changes. Identical blocks are deduplicated across all VMs. 100 GB of Windows VM backups often takes just 30 GB of storage, because all Windows VMs share parts.
Configurable: 7 daily + 4 weekly + 12 monthly + 5 yearly backups. PBS manages this automatically — no cleanup scripts needed. What's too old gets thrown out.
We connect every PBS server to the internet at 10 Gbit — so the bottleneck is practically always on your side, not ours. And you pay nothing for traffic, in or out.
Need just one file back from a VM? PBS can browse the backup and extract single files — no full VM restore required. Saves time, saves nerves.
Who uses this
PBS is for people running Proxmox. These are the most common setups.
PBS 3–5 TB
You run one to five Proxmox hosts with a few dozen VMs. Local backup to NFS isn't enough — you want a second backup target at a different location. PBS with us is the clean way to do it.
PBS 1–2 TB
You run a Proxmox server for your own applications — a website, a few containers, maybe a mail VM. PBS backs all of it up to the cloud, without a second disk hanging off your server.
PBS 5–10 TB
You manage several customer setups on a Proxmox cluster. PBS with us becomes the backup target for all customers — separated via individual datastores, and you set the retention per customer.
PBS 1–3 TB
You have a Proxmox cluster in a cabinet at home. Power fails, a disk dies — you still don't want to rebuild everything. PBS with us is your off-site backup.
PBS 10–25 TB
Compliance rules require off-site backup with defined retention. PBS does this in a standardized way — you document the configuration for your auditor and show that backups are running.
What sets us apart
We run PBS in our own racks in Falkenstein and Nuremberg, typically on Supermicro servers with large SAS2 HDDs behind hardware RAID controllers in RAID 10. That buys two things at once: high I/O for backup and restore, and protection against single-disk failures. No generic NAS, no improvised software RAID.
Others make you jump from 5 to 10 TB. With us you pick every 1 TB step from 1 to 25 TB individually — and upgrade exactly when it gets tight. Fixed monthly price, no usage surprises.
We connect every PBS server to the internet at 10 Gbit — restores and backup transfers run as fast as your side allows. Bandwidth on our end is no longer the bottleneck.
Encryption happens on your Proxmox VE before any data reaches us. We couldn't look inside if we wanted to. Not in an emergency, not on request.
When a backup job hangs, a restore throws errors or retention doesn't kick in as planned: we know PBS from the inside too — datastore structure, garbage collection, verify jobs, sync replication. Open a ticket and one of three permanent team members answers with a concrete fix — no canned script, no escalation loop.
PBS is open source. If you ever want to move elsewhere, you migrate the datastore. We help with the export — even if you're switching to another provider.
Setup
Once your datastore is ready (typically within 24 hours), it's five steps and less than 10 minutes of hands-on work to a running backup job.
Pick a PBS plan in the customer center. Once payment arrives we review the order manually and set up the datastore, typically within 24 hours. You get the server address, datastore name and fingerprint by mail.
In your Proxmox VE: Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server. Enter the server address, datastore name, username and password (sent to you). Fill the fingerprint field with the value from our mail.
Create a new job under Datacenter → Backup → Add. Pick the storage (your new PBS datastore), VMs, schedule and retention. We recommend "every day at 02:00" with 7d/4w/6m retention.
On Proxmox VE: create a key with proxmox-backup-client key create /etc/pve/priv/storage/<PBS-name>.enc, then assign it to the storage: pvesm set <PBS-name> --encryption-key /etc/pve/priv/storage/<PBS-name>.enc — or simply enable the encryption option when creating the PBS storage in the GUI. Store the key safely (password manager or offline backup) — no key, no restore. Details in the knowledge base.
Trigger it manually or wait for the schedule. The first backup is a full backup and takes 30 minutes to several hours, depending on VM size and your uplink. Every backup after that is incremental and fast.

proxmox-backup-client) that you can use directly on Linux servers. For file backups there are better tools like Borg or rsnapshot — PBS is specialized in VM backup.A backup on the same cluster is not a backup. A PBS with us sits in a different data center than your Proxmox VE — no matter where that runs.
