Comparison · Mailhosting vs Postfach

Mailhosting or Postfach? Here's the straight comparison.

Both products run on the same infrastructure — same Mailcow base, same hardware, same security defaults. The difference: your own domain name.

Postfach is the lean entry point at @postfach.re — one address, three storage sizes, every feature from 99 cents. Mailhosting adds your own domain — and from the Family plan up, shared calendars, multiple mailboxes and a .de domain included. Here's both side by side, so you don't have to guess.

Without your own domain

xaweho Postfach

Which one when?

The simple decision — filtered by use case first.

Postfach fits if …

  • You don't have your own domain (yet) and don't want to register one either.
  • You just want out of GMX, Web.de, Gmail — a lean address is enough.
  • You need just one mailbox, for yourself.
  • Push mail on iPhone/Android matters to you, everything else is optional.
  • You want the cheapest way into privacy-minded email (from €0.99/month).

Mailhosting fits if …

  • You want you@your-company.de or name@miller-family.de — your own domain matters.
  • Several people need mailboxes under the same domain (family, team, club).
  • Shared calendars / address books for the group are a must.
  • You need catch-all, domain-wide filters, or you want to manage the mailboxes yourself.
  • You want a .de domain at no extra charge (included from the Family plan up).

You can also use both:

  • Start with Postfach, switch to Mailhosting Solo later — your @postfach.re address stays active as an alias alongside.
  • Postfach as a backup address for sign-ups, Mailhosting for your main domain — keeps private and business mail decoupled.

Picked wrong?

No drama — switching between the products is routine.

If you start with Postfach and later realize you do need your own domain — no problem. You switch to Mailhosting Solo (€1.99/month) in the customer center, bring your own domain or have us register one. Your mailbox moves over completely: all your email, folders, filters, contacts, calendars. Your old @postfach.re address keeps running as an alias — senders who still write to the old address end up in the same mailbox.

The other direction works too: if you have Mailhosting today and find you don't need your own domain after all, you can go back to Postfach. In practice that's rare — having your own domain is usually exactly what people want to keep.

Plan changes within a product (say, from Postfach Start to Pro, or from Mailhosting Family to Team) are one click in the portal too. Remaining term is credited, no data loss, no migration.

Already decided? Here's the direct way to your plan.

Both products come with 30-day money-back, both with free migration from your old provider. Not sure? Start with Postfach — you can upgrade anytime later.
