Setting up Hyper Backup — your Synology backs up to us

Step by step to an offsite backup: connect Hyper Backup Storage, enable client-side encryption, configure Smart Recycle, test a restore.

Snapshots and RAID protect you on the same hardware. A real backup means: a second copy in a different place. With our Hyper Backup Storage, your Synology — whether it sits at home or is hosted with us — backs up to Germany using nothing but its built-in tools. Set it up once and it just runs.

Prerequisites

  • Hyper Backup installed on your Synology (in Package Center, usually already there).
  • A booked Hyper Backup Storage — sized to your data plus headroom for versions. Rule of thumb: used storage times 1.2 to 1.5.
  • Server address, username and password from the setup email you got after ordering.

Create the backup task

  1. Open Hyper Backup.
  2. Click + → Data backup task.
  3. Pick Synology as the destination type (“Synology to Synology”) — your backup destination runs on a Synology on our side, so every Hyper Backup feature works natively.

Choose source folders

Our recommendation from day-to-day ticket work:

  • Drive folder: yes
  • Photos folder: yes
  • Backup target folders for PC/Mac: yes
  • System folders (@docker, @cache): no
  • Surveillance recordings: only if you really need the footage — those files are huge

Backing up packages and their configurations is worth it: if you ever swap hardware, your setup comes back much faster.

Enable encryption — the most important step

In the client-side encryption step:

  1. Check Enable encryption.
  2. Set a password — this is your backup key. From your password manager, at least 20 characters.
  3. DSM offers a key file to download — download it and store it safely.

This way your Synology encrypts before anything leaves your house — all we ever hold is a data blob. The flip side comes with it: lose the password and the key file and the backup is worthless. We can’t help, because we never had the key. Three copies:

  1. In your password manager.
  2. As a key file on a USB stick in a safe.
  3. Printed out in a binder — sounds old-fashioned, but it’s the most reliable layer against ransomware.

Smart Recycle is Synology’s own rotation scheme: every state from the last 24 hours, daily versions from the last week, weekly from the last four weeks, monthly after that. A lot smarter than a blunt “keep the last 30”. Enable the integrity check in the same dialog while you’re there.

Run the first backup

After saving, Hyper Backup asks whether it should start right away — say yes. The initial run is a full backup and travels over your upload link: at 40 Mbit/s upload, that’s roughly 400 GB per day. Interruptions don’t matter; Hyper Backup resumes on the next run. After that, runs are incremental — typically 5 to 30 minutes per night.

Restoring

Single files: Hyper Backup → Backup Explorer → open the task, pick a date, browse the folders, pull back the file or folder.

Full restore on new hardware: Install Hyper Backup on the new Synology → Restore data backup → enter the connection details of your Hyper Backup Storage → enter the key → pick the backup set. Shared folders, packages and configurations then land back on the NAS.

One tip we mean seriously: try a restore once before you need it. Pulling back a single test file takes five minutes and proves that your key and your backup actually work.

Frequently asked questions

How much storage does the backup need over time? Initially about 100% of the backed-up data; with Smart Recycle and deduplication it grows to typically 120–150%. So for 2 TB of payload data, plan roughly 3 TB of destination size.

What if a backup run gets interrupted? Hyper Backup resumes at the same point on the next run — no full restart.

What happens when my destination fills up? The job reports an error in DSM; existing backups stay untouched. Fix: shorten the rotation, or open a ticket to go one size up — we make the change the same business day.

Can I create multiple backup tasks? Yes — say Drive daily, Photos weekly, each with its own schedule. Just don’t run them in parallel, or the runs steal each other’s bandwidth.

Two Synologys to one destination? Book a separate destination per device — that keeps storage, credentials and restores cleanly apart. Got many devices? Open a ticket and we’ll look at the most sensible split together.

Does the backup slow down my internet during the day? With the default schedule (nightly) you won’t notice a thing. If you do need it: Hyper Backup can set bandwidth limits per time window.
