Until now, Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) came in one form to rent with us: as a datastore on one of our large backup servers — encrypted, RAID 10, in 1 TB steps. For most people that’s exactly right. But the same question kept showing up in tickets: “Can’t I just get a whole PBS? With my own interface, my own datastores, my own users?” As of today: yes. The Dedicated Proxmox Backup Server is one machine per customer — from €49 a month.
What you get
A physical machine running nothing but your Proxmox Backup Server: at least 6 cores at 3.2 GHz, 32 GB RAM, one 3.5” hard disk in the size you order. Plus the complete PBS web interface with admin rights — datastores and namespaces following your own scheme, separate users and API tokens per tenant, verify, prune and garbage collection schedules the way you want them, sync jobs with other PBS instances via push or pull.
It stays managed all the same: hardware, operating system, PBS updates and monitoring of machine and disk are on us. You set backup policy, we run operations. That’s why there’s no root via SSH — if you want to manage the machine entirely yourself, take a Dedicated Server and install PBS on it.
Five sizes, one principle
| Plan | Hard disk | Price/month |
|---|---|---|
| PBS Dedicated 2 TB | 2 TB | €49 |
| PBS Dedicated 4 TB | 4 TB | €59 |
| PBS Dedicated 10 TB | 10 TB | €89 |
| PBS Dedicated 16 TB | 16 TB | €119 |
| PBS Dedicated 20 TB | 20 TB | €139 |
All prices include 19% German VAT, cancel monthly, no setup fee, data transfer included — the first big full backup too. More than 20 TB is available on request at a fixed monthly price. Provisioning within 24–48 hours, because we only build a machine once it’s ordered.
Straight talk: one disk, no RAID
This is the budget class, and we tell you before you order what’s missing: one hard disk, no RAID, no second site. If the disk fails, we swap the hardware and provide you with a fresh PBS — the backups on the broken disk are gone, and the next run fills the new target. Your originals keep running untouched on your Proxmox VE.
For the second copy of your backups — the offsite backup the 3-2-1 rule calls for: three copies, two media, one off-site — that’s exactly right. As the only copy, it isn’t. If you want both, attach a datastore in our PBS hosting as a sync target to your own server — that one sits on RAID 10, and two targets beat any single drive.
And why a hard disk instead of an SSD? Because backups are written sequentially — a hard disk handles that well and cheaply, with up to 20 TB of room. Verify runs and garbage collection take longer than on an SSD; schedule them at night and you won’t notice. Restores run at hard-disk speed — for restores in seconds you’ve got your local PBS anyway.
Datastore or your own server — which branch fits you?
Both branches share the same foundation: a hosted backup target in Germany, client-side AES-256-GCM encryption (we can’t read your backups), ticket support from people who run PBS themselves every day.
The datastore is right when you want a safe target and nothing else: RAID 10 included, 1 to 25 TB in 1 TB steps, upgrade any time, usable right after ordering, no admin duties. For one Proxmox host with a handful of VMs it remains the better and cheaper choice.
The Dedicated PBS is right when you want the machine: IT service providers who separate customer backups cleanly (own datastore, own users, own retention per tenant); anyone who has to document to auditors that backups live on exclusive hardware; setups with their own sync topology — PBS with us as the target, a second PBS at home as the mirror. And if you want to move over from the datastore: both systems run with us, we set up a one-time sync — no new full backup across your line.
Getting started
Pick a size, order, and within 24–48 hours the address and admin credentials arrive by email. Then add it in Proxmox VE under Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server, enable encryption (keep the key safe!), create your first backup job. Not sure which branch fits? Open a ticket before ordering — we’ll look at your setup together.
